The Great Textile Misconception
In the world of luxury bedding, the terms "Silk" and "Satin" are frequently used interchangeably. However, to the discerning eye and to your skin they couldn't be more different. At Ella & Grace, we exclusively use 6A Grade 22-Momme Mulberry Silk. Here is why the distinction matters for your beauty ritual.
The Structural Difference
- Silk is a Protein: Specifically, it is a natural protein fibre produced by silkworms. It contains 18 essential amino acids and a protein called Sericin, which is remarkably similar to the proteins found in human skin and hair.
- Satin is a Weave: "Satin" is not a material; it is a way of weaving threads. Most "Satin" masks found on the high street are made from Polyester a synthetic plastic derived from petroleum.
The Friction Factor: Saving Your Hair
If you wake up with "bedhead" or frizz, your mask strap or pillowcase is likely the culprit.
- Synthetic Satin: While it feels "slippery," it creates static electricity. This ruffles the hair cuticle, leading to knots and breakage.
- Pure Mulberry Silk: Silk is naturally frictionless. Our silk-wrapped headstraps allow your hair to glide underneath without snagging. This preserves your hairstyle and protects fine hair from being pulled out during the night.
The Moisture Test: Skin Hydration
One of the primary reasons for "sleep creases" and dry skin is absorption.
- Cotton and Polyester: These materials are "hydrophilic," meaning they thirstily drink up the expensive night creams and serums you apply before bed.
- Mulberry Silk: Silk is naturally less absorbent. It keeps your skincare on your face, where it belongs. This ensures your eye area stays hydrated, reducing the appearance of fine lines and morning puffiness.
The 22-Momme Standard
Weight matters. While some brands use 19-momme silk (which is thin and prone to tearing), Ella & Grace uses 22-Momme.
- Durability: It withstands the rigours of nightly use.
- Opaque Finish: The higher density ensures a better light-blocking effect.
- Lustre: It provides that signature "Quiet Luxury" sheen that defines the Soft Blush and Twilight collections.
